SEO & AI SEARCH

AI SEO vs traditional SEO: what should your South African business prioritise?

Start with the problem your business needs to solve. If buyers cannot find or understand your main services, changing the label on your marketing package will not fix the underlying constraint.

Define the decision before choosing the service

Write down one priority service, the customers it suits and the action you want them to take. A Cape Town consultancy might want enquiries for one advisory service, while a hotel might want direct booking enquiries for a particular stay type. These are hypothetical examples: your starting point should come from your actual offer and customer conversations.

Next, identify the uncertainty. Is your page difficult to discover, unclear once found, or unconvincing when compared with alternatives? Those are different problems and may need different work.

Understand where the work overlaps

Traditional SEO addresses search discovery through technical access, useful content and a clear website structure. AI SEO commonly describes work focused on discovery and representation in AI-assisted research. GEO and AEO are overlapping industry terms, not a separate set of guaranteed platform placements.

Google states that its existing SEO best practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as a supporting link; eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

Choose the first workstream

Use the strongest evidence you have to decide where to begin. Treat the following as planning prompts rather than a diagnostic score.

Observed issuePractical first step
Important service pages are blocked or inaccessibleInvestigate technical access and indexing settings.
Pages attract visitors but leave basic buyer questions unansweredImprove service scope, fit, evidence and the enquiry path.
The site is accessible but AI answers misrepresent the offerRecord examples and correct unclear or inconsistent public information.
You cannot distinguish suitable enquiries from spamImprove lead recording and follow-up before claiming commercial progress.

Budget around outputs and ownership

Ask what will be delivered, who implements it and how completion is checked. A useful proposal separates the initial review, website changes, content production and ongoing reporting. Confirm the amount of subject-expert input needed from your team.

For South African businesses, request pricing in rand and clarify whether development, tools or content production are included. Do not compare two monthly fees before comparing the scope. A lower fee that leaves implementation entirely with your team may require more internal capacity.

Review progress without changing everything at once

Choose a small group of important pages, document the changes and agree a review point. Check implementation first, then relevant discovery signals and enquiry quality. Keep notes about campaigns, seasonality or offer changes that could affect the outcome.

A hypothetical improvement to an accounting service page might clarify client fit and the onboarding process. The practical question is whether suitable buyers now have enough information to enquire, not whether the page repeats every AI SEO term.
